CHIROPRACTIC

One of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is an evidence-based, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system.

Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.

Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient.

One of the most common therapies a chiropractor uses is spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), which can comprise a variety of adjustment techniques. Specific training in SMT allows chiropractors to provide highly-skilled and precise adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function.

Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions.

There are many reasons to seek chiropractic care:

• Back pain

• Neck pain

• Headache

• Whiplash

• Strains and sprains

• Concussion

• Work and sports injuries

• Arthritis

• Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs

CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

Dr. Scott has a strong interest in Concussion management and has been treating concussions for almost 10 years. He recently received his level II provider Status through SHIFT Concussion. As information around concussion treatment is constantly evolving, we are staying up to date with the latest research and treatment methods.

Each concussion is different and requires an individual treatment plan. After a thorough history and examination, Dr. Scott will educate you on what is not working well and what can be done to get you back to work, school, sport or daily activities, safely and efficiently.

NATUROPATHY

Naturopathic medicine is a system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself. It embraces many therapies, including herbs, massage, acupuncture, exercise, and nutritional counselling.

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person -- that means mind, body, and spirit. It also aims to heal the root causes of an illness -- not just stop the symptoms.

A naturopathic doctor may spend 1 to 2 hours examining you. He or she may ask questions about your health history, stress levels, and lifestyle habits. Afterwards, he or she will discuss your personal health plan. Naturopathic medicine focuses on education and prevention, so your doctor may give you diet, exercise, or stress management tips. They might use complementary medicine -- like homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture -- in addition to naturopathic treatments. They may also use touch, such as massage and pressure, to create balance in your body. This is called naturopathic manipulative therapy.

OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathic medicine emphasizes overall health and the relation among the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs. Osteopathic physicians (also called doctors of osteopathic medicine, or DOs) base diagnosis and treatment on the idea that the body's systems are interconnected. Instead of treating specific symptoms or illnesses, they regard and treat the body as an integrated whole. Osteopathic medicine focuses on disease prevention and health maintenance.

Osteopathy can provide relief and treatment for a wide range of conditions.

These include:

• Arthritis

• Foot, ankle, hip, and knee pain

• Back pain, neck pain, and sciatica

• Hand, shoulder, and elbow pain

• Headaches

• Tennis and golfer's elbow

• Postural problems due to pregnancy, sports injury, driving or work strain, or digestive issues

• Neuralgia

Osteopathic physicians can also detect conditions that are not treatable through osteopathy, to refer patients to other specialists.

CUSTOM ORTHOTICS

Orthotics are special shoe or heel inserts a doctor prescribes that are custom-made specifically for you.

Orthotics can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan to address various symptoms, usually having to do with pain and discomfort of the feet and legs. Some of the goals a doctor may have for orthotic treatment include:

• Correcting foot deformities

• Helping the foot or ankle function better

• Providing support to the ankle

• Reducing the risks for further injuries

Orthotics are more than just a heel pad or shoe insert you can buy at most athletic stores. They’re highly customized shoe or heel inserts made for your feet. Your doctor will only recommend an orthotic if an off-the-shelf device or other treatments, such as exercises at home, haven’t proven effective.

Doctors may prescribe orthotics to treat a number of medical conditions. Examples include:

• Arthritis

• Back pain

• Bunions

• Bursitis

• Diabetes

• Flat feet

• Hammertoes

• Heel spurs

• High arches

• Injuries

• Plantar fasciitis

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach to treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with needles. It is a minimally invasive method to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin surface in order to influence tissues, glands, organs, and various functions of the body.

Each acupuncture needle produces a tiny injury at the insertion site, and although it’s slight enough to cause little to no discomfort, it’s enough of a signal to let the body know it needs to respond. This response involves stimulation of the immune system, promoting circulation to the area, wound healing, and pain modulation.

Here are just some of the many claims:

• Back pain

• Neck pain

• Headache

• Whiplash

• Strains and sprains

• Concussion

• Work and sports injuries

• Arthritis

• Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs

COMPRESSION HOSIERY

Compression stockings or hosiery are elastic garments that apply external pressure to the lower limbs to promote better venous flow. They work alongside your calf muscles to direct the blood back to the heart and lungs. Stockings can be used as a means of preventive care or as a therapeutic aid to manage venous disorders.

They are designed to reduce fatigue, relieve swelling, improve blood flow and tissue oxygenation, and optimize comfort. A doctor mas prescribe compression hosiery for a number of conditions/lifestyles;

• Prolonged sitting or standing

• Pregnancy

• Menopause

• Swelling in lower limbs

• Venous insufficiency

• Varicose & spider veins

• History of DVT

• Recent surgery, trauma or disease
